Mauldin High School Marching Band Parents

Greetings ,

It is a pleasure to have you as part of this exciting experience. "Rookie" parents are in for a treat as you learn about the marching band world. "Veteran" parents have much to look forward to as we take the marching band to a new level. No matter your previous experience, all parents must understand that your help is needed. The band program always needs parental support in some way. While being a spectator is fun, you will surely appreciate the level of your child’s commitment if you take an active role in the band’s development.

The first method of parental support is to review the marching band’s expectations with your child. The band will be making more of a competitive effort this year, and the standards will be raised from previous years. Attendance at camp and rehearsals is a must. The four Tuesday/Thursday summer rehearsals (July 7, 9, 14, and 16) are required if the student is in town and not attending a camp or on vacation. All students who will miss ANY of these rehearsals are to submit an Absence Request Form. This can now be completed online in the Forms section of www.mavband.com. The same standard will apply to the three rehearsals following Band Camp (August 10, 11 and 13). All other rehearsals, football games, and competitions are MANDATORY. The details of the attendance policy can be found in the 2009-2010 Band Handbook which will be sent home at the beginning of the school year and is available on www.mavband.com.

The second method of parental support is to participate in Band Booster fundraising events. This year, the income requirements have changed due to school district guidelines. Bad debts will be reported to the school for collection. Your help is needed to ensure that we adequately supply the Booster Club with this necessary financial aid in addition to the school accounts. One of the most important ways to do this is for every parent to participate in the Mauldin Tournament of Bands on Saturday, October 10. Another is to volunteer a few hours once or twice a month during lunch to sell Cheese Nachos. The band also participates in a Fruit Sale. Many parents work at the Greenville Drive games. Everything you do to fundraise for the band will offset the financial obligations of the Band Boosters. The responsibility to create positive opportunities for our children lies with each one of you.

Finally, another way to support the band program is to spend time with the band. There are many tasks that rely on parental assistance: chaperoning, health care, sewing, water distributor, cooking, etc. The list goes on. Again, please do not assume that somebody else will cover these necessary tasks. It is important that you voice your interests so we can place you in a suitable position. Visit www.mavband.com, attend booster meetings, and contact a booster representative. Opportunities are available. We immediately need people to sign up to help with Band Camp. Parents must be available to assist with necessary items. Please also look at the date that you are to help supply dinner for the students and staff. Everyone needs to help out!

Please review the expectations of the marching band located on the other pages. Thank you in advance for your support. I look forward to working with all of you this year.

Sincerely,

Adam Scheuch
